Healthcare notifications should disclose only the information appropriate to the channel and recipient, then lead to an authorised current record. Separate a reminder from confirmation that a patient saw or acted on it. Shared devices, proxy access and outdated messages make notification design part of the product's access model.

Let’s plan your healthcare notifications.

Bring your workflow and the decisions you need to make. We’ll help you clarify requirements, review the trade-offs and define a practical next step.

01

Classify messages by purpose

List appointment updates, administrative requests, account notices and other supported categories. Have the institution's responsible teams approve channel suitability, content and any escalation process.

Clinical communication requirements need qualified review. Do not treat this software checklist as a clinical notification protocol or a guarantee that a message will reach someone in time.

02

Create a channel-content matrix

Channel or surfaceQuestion to resolveFailure scenario
Lock-screen previewWhat can a bystander see?Sensitive detail appears on a shared phone
Email subjectWhat is visible before sign-in?Subject exposes visit information
SMSWhat minimum context is sufficient?Number belongs to a different recipient
In-app inboxWhat scope does this account hold?Proxy sees an unauthorised category
Linked destinationWhich access check is required?Old session opens the wrong patient context
Support historyWhat evidence may staff inspect?Full payload exposed unnecessarily

Approve the actual message templates, not just abstract categories. A harmless category label can still contain an overly detailed generated message.

03

Revalidate the destination

For a hypothetical rescheduled appointment, opening an older reminder should show the current appointment state and explain the change. Avoid a destination that reconstructs old details entirely from URL parameters.

Apply authentication and record-level authorisation after opening. A notification reference is not proof that the person holding the device remains entitled to the record. Consider revoked proxy relationships and changed contact information.

04

Measure the right outcomes

Keep provider acceptance, delivery evidence, opens and confirmed task outcomes separate. Record what the channel actually supports. Where the institution needs an acknowledged communication, define the action and responsible follow-up workflow.

Test disabled permissions, delayed messages, changed contact details and revoked access. Use synthetic records and review whether logs or support tools reveal more information than the message itself.

05

Notification questions

Should messages include full report details for convenience?

Decide through the approved privacy and communication process. A limited message with an authorised destination may better match the channel's exposure.

Does a delivery receipt mean the patient understood the message?

No. Delivery, reading, understanding and action are distinct outcomes.

Connect the design to proxy-access rules and discuss message categories with Drema's healthcare software team.
