WhatsApp Business API in India: Pricing and How to Integrate
How WhatsApp Business Platform pricing works in India, message categories and the customer service window, plus setup steps, templates, webhooks and the direct versus BSP decision.

WhatsApp is where Indian customers already are, which makes the WhatsApp Business Platform the most effective channel for order updates, OTPs, reminders and support. The API is different from the free WhatsApp Business app: it has no inbox of its own, it is paid, and it connects to your software.
How pricing works
Since July 2025 Meta charges per delivered template message rather than per conversation. The rate depends on the message category and the recipient's country code. Rates are set by Meta in a published rate card and revised periodically, so treat the figures below as indicative and check the current card.
The rules that shape your design
A few platform rules decide what you can build.
Design journeys so customers message you first. Replies inside the window cost less and are read more.
Setup steps
Getting access involves Meta's verification as well as code.
Direct with Meta or through a provider
You can call Meta's Cloud API directly or use a business solution provider.
What to build
For a product integration, the following pieces are usually needed.
Keeping cost down
Send utility messages rather than marketing wherever the content genuinely is transactional, since Meta reclassifies templates that mix in promotion. Use authentication templates for OTPs. Segment marketing to users likely to respond, because unread marketing lowers quality and wastes spend. Track cost per category per month from the webhook pricing data, and store opt-in records to meet both Meta's policy and the DPDP Act.
