Mobile session expiry should lead to a clear sign-in path while preserving only the task context the product can retain safely. Recheck access after authentication and distinguish unsent work from confirmed server records. Returning to the same screen is not sufficient if the app restores data under the wrong account.

CTA Background

Let’s plan your app session recovery.

Bring your workflow, constraints and open questions. We’ll help you define the requirements and work through a practical next step.

01

Define what survives the interruption

Inventory draft text, selected records, attachments and pending operations. Decide which can be retained locally, which require server storage and which must be cleared on sign-out or account change.

For a hypothetical field-service app, a draft report may be worth preserving, but an attachment belonging to another customer's workspace must not appear after a different user signs in.

02

Use a session-recovery matrix

SituationBehaviour to specifyAcceptance check
Session expires during entryExplain interruption and save stateNo false submission confirmation
Same user returnsRestore permitted useful contextCurrent permissions rechecked
Another account signs inIsolate prior account's materialNo cross-account draft exposure
Request outcome uncertainVerify the existing operationNo repeated consequential action
Device offlineDistinguish local from authenticated workHonest limitation and recovery
Sensitive action resumesApply appropriate reauthenticationAuthority is current

OWASP's authentication guidance discusses reauthentication for sensitive features and risk events. Have the security owner select controls for the actual workflow.

03

Resume through a validated destination

Preserve a permitted destination reference rather than an arbitrary redirect. After sign-in, retrieve current record state. If the record was removed or reassigned, explain that outcome rather than reconstructing an old editable copy.

Keep the distinction between expired access and a failed business operation. If submission may already have succeeded, retrieve the operation outcome before inviting another submission.

04

Test outside the happy path

Expire a synthetic session while editing, uploading and awaiting confirmation. Change the user's role before resuming. Verify local storage, previews and logs follow the intended account boundary.

Review support messages for accuracy. Your session expired can explain an access problem, but it should not conceal a server failure unrelated to authentication.

05

Session questions

Should the app silently refresh every session forever?

Use the approved session and risk model. Convenience should not define access lifetime by accident.

Can every draft be restored after sign-in?

Only where the storage and authority model supports it. Explain recovery limits clearly.

Pair this with multi-step draft recovery, and review mobile session behaviour with Drema's app developers.
