A barcode scan produces an identifier, not proof that the correct business action should occur. Define supported code formats, record matching, quantity entry and duplicate handling. The app should show the matched item and relevant context before consequential posting where the workflow requires review.

Let’s plan your barcode workflow.

Bring your workflow, constraints and open questions. We’ll help you define the requirements and work through a practical next step.

01

Specify the scanning context

Identify camera scanning, external scanner input or both. Record supported labels and conditions from the intended workplace, including damaged labels, lighting and similar packaging.

For a hypothetical warehouse app, scanning an item code may identify the product but not its batch, location or quantity. Specify those additional requirements instead of guessing them from the scan.

02

Create a scan-result matrix

ResultExpected behaviourTest case
One permitted matchShow the correct record contextSimilar product names
No matchClear correction or lookup routeNew or unregistered label
Several candidatesAuthorised disambiguationReused supplier code
Repeated scanDefined increment or duplicate warningScanner emits twice
Restricted recordRespect access without disclosureAnother location's item
Unreadable labelManual alternative with validationDamaged or low-quality print

Separate a deliberate repeated scan that increments quantity from an accidental duplicate input. Make the active mode visible and provide an appropriate correction path.

03

Validate before posting

Check current record state, permissions and units on the server. A code captured earlier may refer to an inactive item or a record no longer available for the action.

Avoid using a barcode value as authentication. A printed identifier can be copied and does not establish user authority.

04

Test the physical workflow

Use authorised synthetic labels and representative devices. Verify scanning while moving between fields, handling a scanner disconnect and resuming after a lost connection.

Measure accepted task completion and corrections, not just scan speed. A fast reader can make the overall process worse if staff frequently correct incorrect quantities or locations afterwards.

05

Barcode questions

Should a successful scan immediately submit the transaction?

Only when the approved workflow and controls make that appropriate. Many tasks need additional context or review.

Is camera testing enough for an external scanner?

No. Input method, focus and device behaviour differ. Test the hardware used by the intended audience.

Use the device testing matrix, and discuss scanning states with Drema's mobile development team.
