Account deletion needs a defined request, identity check, processing state and confirmation of what has happened. Separate deleting an account from signing out, cancelling a subscription or disabling access. Map dependent records and services before promising an outcome the product cannot deliver consistently.

CTA Background

Let’s plan your account lifecycle.

Bring your workflow and the decisions you need to make. We’ll help you clarify requirements, review the trade-offs and define a practical next step.

01

Inventory the account's dependencies

List identity records, profile data, uploaded files, third-party accounts, active subscriptions and shared business records. Identify which team owns each dependency and which retention decisions require policy or legal review.

Apple's account-deletion guidance addresses apps that support account creation and distinguishes deletion from temporary deactivation. Review current platform requirements for the actual distribution channels before release. Platform review is separate from determining the organisation's legal retention obligations.

02

Specify request and completion states

StageUser-facing questionImplementation decision
DiscoveryWhere can I request deletion?Clear account-settings route
ExplanationWhat changes and what remains?Accurate dependency and retention summary
VerificationIs the requester authorised?Appropriate identity and session checks
SubmissionHas the request been recorded?Stable request reference and duplicate handling
ProcessingIs work still pending?Track dependent systems and failures
CompletionWhat outcome is confirmed?Evidence-based confirmation and support path

Do not label a request completed while a required downstream step is merely queued. If processing is asynchronous, explain the expected process without inventing a universal completion time.

03

Separate personal accounts from shared responsibilities

A hypothetical project-management app may have one workspace owner responsible for other members and shared records. Define ownership transfer and billing responsibility explicitly. Avoid silently deleting colleagues' work or leaving the organisation without an administrator.

The user should understand relevant consequences before the final action. Keep warnings specific: affected access, exports, subscription handling and recoverability. A generic irreversible-action message does not explain the product's actual behaviour.

04

Verify downstream handling and support

Test with authorised synthetic accounts across the services involved. Check that sessions and access behave as designed, deleted material is not recreated by a later sync, and support can trace a request without retaining unnecessary account content.

Document failure recovery for partial processing. Retrying a deletion request must not create new accounts or repeat unrelated financial actions. Have the responsible policy owner approve the final user-facing explanation.

05

Account deletion questions

Is deleting the app the same as deleting the account?

Usually not. Explain the difference within the product and provide the applicable account workflow.

Should cancelling a subscription be bundled into deletion?

Define the relationship for the payment arrangement in use and verify provider behaviour. Do not assume that removing a profile cancels an external subscription.

Add the workflow to the mobile launch checklist, and review account dependencies with Drema's mobile development team.
