FASTag and Vehicle Tracking APIs for Fleet Software

The data sources a fleet system can integrate in India: FASTag toll transactions, GPS devices, SIM-based tracking, VAHAN and Sarathi records and the ULIP platform.

A fleet owner wants to know three things about every vehicle: where it is, what it is costing and whether its papers are valid. In India each answer comes from a different data source. Good fleet software combines them so that a trip record fills itself in.

01

FASTag toll data

FASTag runs on NPCI's National Electronic Toll Collection system, with tags issued by banks. Each toll crossing creates a transaction with the plaza, time and amount. For a fleet this is both an expense record and a coarse location trail that needs no device in the vehicle.

Toll crossings are a free location trail. Match them to trips and most toll expense entry disappears.

Fleet card and toll aggregatorsProvide consolidated APIs across tags, with recharge and low-balance alerts
ULIPThe government's logistics data platform offers a FASTag API returning toll plaza crossings for a vehicle
02

GPS devices

Hardware trackers give continuous location, speed, ignition status and, with sensors, fuel level and temperature. Certain categories of public service and goods vehicles are required to carry tracking devices that meet the AIS 140 standard. Integration is either through the device vendor's API or by receiving device data directly on your own server.

Vendor APIFastest; poll or receive webhooks for position and events
Direct device protocolYour server parses device packets; more work, no vendor dependence
Mixed fleetsNormalise data from several vendors into one position table
03

Tracking without hardware

Market vehicles hired for a single trip rarely have a device you can access. Two options fill the gap.

SIM-based trackingLocation from the driver's mobile network, through licensed providers, after the driver's consent by SMS or call. Works on basic phones; accuracy is at tower level
Driver appGPS from the driver's smartphone, with proof of delivery and expense capture
04

Vehicle and driver records

The transport ministry's VAHAN and Sarathi databases hold vehicle registration and driving licence records. Access for businesses is through authorised channels: ULIP, API Setu, DigiLocker for documents shared by the owner, or commercial verification providers.

ULIP: one integration for many sources

The Unified Logistics Interface Platform, set up under the National Logistics Policy, exposes data from many government systems through a single set of APIs: vehicle and licence records, FASTag crossings, rail freight tracking, port and customs systems and more. Companies register on the ULIP portal, submit a use case, integrate in a test environment and move to production after approval. Check the portal for current terms of access.

Putting it together

In the fleet system, a trip should pull GPS or SIM location for live tracking, FASTag crossings for toll cost and route confirmation, and vehicle and driver records for compliance checks before dispatch. Tolling itself is changing, with barrier-free, multi-lane free-flow plazas being introduced using FASTag and number plate recognition, so keep toll data ingestion flexible. Because location is personal data about the driver, get consent and limit tracking to working trips.
