Document AI Confidence Scores: Design Field Review and Correction
Route document AI fields using evaluated confidence, consequence, validation rules and source evidence instead of an unexplained universal threshold.

A document AI confidence score needs a defined meaning and a tested relationship to error before it drives unattended processing. Design field-level review around consequence, validation rules and source evidence. A high score alone should not authorise a consequential business action or establish that the extracted record is correct.

Let’s plan your document review process.
Bring your workflow and the decisions you need to make. We’ll help you clarify requirements, review the trade-offs and define a practical next step.
Define the output and its use
List extracted fields, allowed values, source locations and downstream actions. Reading an invoice reference for search has a different consequence from using a bank detail to trigger payment.
Determine whether the supplied score measures recognition, classification or another model-specific quantity. Do not compare scores from different models as if they share a calibrated scale without evidence.
Create a field review policy
| Field condition | Proposed routing | Evidence needed |
|---|---|---|
| Required value absent | Human review or return to source | Missing-field reason |
| Value violates a known rule | Correction queue | Validation result and source passage |
| Several plausible candidates | Reviewer selection | Candidate locations |
| Score below evaluated threshold | Review according to tested policy | Threshold version and task results |
| High-impact field | Additional approved verification | Responsible actor and decision |
| Reviewer changes a value | Preserve correction history | Before, after and source reference |
Choose thresholds using representative authorised examples and the acceptable error trade-off for the task. No universal confidence percentage fits every document field.
Make the source easy to inspect
For a hypothetical invoice workflow, show the extracted amount beside the relevant document region and currency context. Avoid forcing reviewers to search a long PDF while an unrelated high-confidence label encourages automatic acceptance.
Distinguish the original extracted value from a later human correction. Downstream users need to know which record version was approved and whether the source file changed afterwards.
Measure review outcomes
Track field accuracy, false acceptance, unnecessary review and reviewer effort on a labelled dataset. Review performance by document type and difficult conditions such as poor scans or unusual layouts.
If confidence thresholds change, rerun the evaluation and document the expected effect on workload and risk. A lower queue volume is not automatically an improvement if more incorrect values pass through.
Confidence questions
Is 95 percent confidence a 95 percent chance of correctness?
Do not assume that interpretation. Establish the provider's definition and evaluate calibration for your data and task.
Should corrected records automatically retrain the model?
Only through an approved data and evaluation process. Corrections can be ambiguous, sensitive or unsuitable as training labels.
