An AI-to-human support handoff should preserve the user's actual problem, relevant authorised context and the work already attempted. Create an accountable queue item with a next action rather than merely showing a Contact support link. Make clear whether a person has received the case and what remains uncertain.

Let’s plan your AI support handoff.
Bring your workflow, constraints and open questions. We’ll help you define the requirements and work through a practical next step.
Define when handoff is appropriate
List triggers such as unresolved ambiguity, unavailable evidence, repeated failure and a request needing human authority. Avoid forcing users through repeated unsuccessful responses before letting them seek help.
For a hypothetical customer assistant, the model may explain an invoice but lack authority to correct it. That should lead to the appropriate team, not a fabricated promise that an adjustment has been made.
Specify the handoff packet
| Item | Information to include | Safeguard |
|---|---|---|
| Problem | User's goal and current obstacle | Distinguish user statement from model inference |
| Record context | Permitted references | Do not expose unrelated records |
| Attempts | Checks and actions already performed | Show actual outcomes, not claimed actions |
| Evidence | Relevant source and version | Reviewer can verify support |
| Uncertainty | Missing facts or disputed interpretation | Do not summarise guesses as facts |
| Ownership | Destination queue and next step | Visible assignment and escalation |
Retain a link to permitted original context where a summary may be insufficient. Restrict sensitive content according to the support role's authority.
Confirm the transfer honestly
Distinguish case creation, assignment and human acknowledgement. Do not say An agent is reviewing this when the request is only queued. Provide a reference and explain the actual response process.
Preserve continuity if the user returns later. Show whether the case is open and avoid creating duplicates every time the conversation resumes.
Evaluate handoff usefulness
Ask authorised support staff to resolve synthetic cases from the packet. Measure missing context, inaccurate summaries and repeated user questions. A high handoff rate alone does not show whether the system helped.
Review outcomes by trigger. Some cases may reveal a missing article or broken integration; others properly require human judgement. Improve the relevant cause rather than simply trying to suppress transfers.
Handoff questions
Should the full conversation always be copied?
Include only what the authorised review needs, with access to permitted context where appropriate. Entire histories can contain unrelated sensitive information.
Does creating a ticket complete the support task?
No. It establishes a tracked handoff, not resolution. Keep those outcomes separate in reporting.
